Concept of the exhibition

At the opening of the Jubilee of Mercy, announced by Pope Francesco, which will begin on the 8th of December 2015, many religious and  institutional locations will be open to prestigious art exhibitions focused on the religious theme of  “Mercy”. The important exhibition “ARTISTS FOR THE JUBILEE”, organized by the Roman society START, already engaged in the Venice Biennale in 2015, and curated by Dr. Maria Luciani, has been conceived for this important celebration.

The first exhibition will start on the 3rd of December and will end on the 13th of December 2015. It will take place in two different locations:  the famous Basilica of Saint Paul , outside the Vatican Walls, one of the four papal basilicas and the second largest basilica after St Peter’s one in the Vatican, and the Pontifical Palace Maffei Marescotti (La Pigna), previously venue of the Vicariate of Rome and, at the moment, extraterritorial territory of the Vatican. The international art event will be divided into three sections: Painting, Sculpture and Photography.

The exhibition will have the patronage of the Vatican State.

The indiction bull  of the Jubilee Misericordiae Vultus has, as its primary purpose, a New Renaissance, in a time of crisis and difficulty for the whole world. In this Holy Year, the art exhibition, well studied and thought, symbolizes a drastic change of direction, a new course in which the shelter in Paradise will be advocated by figurative, abstract, and informal works aimed at new pictorial canons. The whole event will be focused on a “sacred” (model) in which the Beauty but the Purity too will have a common reading.

Artworks will be connoted by clear tones, the light will guide the Artist and he will offer himself at the service of the divine message, exteriorising it in his artwork. Just as the sacred texts have been for centuries an inexhaustible source of art and beauty, in the same way, this exhibition will follow a paradigm that has in the Mystery of the Death and Resurrection of Christ, His Forgiveness, His Mercy, its Primigenial Source.

The artists will have to abdicate their personal style in favour of an Universal, Current Art , close to Christian needs; they will have to unveil their souls, to reveal to be Sons of God in art, to be witness in the jubilee year with white, silver, and gold; of the triumph of the divine message that calls everyone.

THE JUBILEE OF MERCY  2016

Misericordiae Vultus

BULL OF INDICTION
OF THE EXTRAORDINARY
JUBILEE OF MERCY

FRANCIS
BISHOP OF ROME
SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD
TO ALL WHO READ THIS LETTER
GRACE, MERCY, AND PEACE

1. Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian faith. Mercy has become living and visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him. The Father, “rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4), after having revealed his name to Moses as “a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (Ex 34:6), has never ceased to show, in various ways throughout history, his divine nature. In the “fullness of time” (Gal 4:4), when everything had been arranged according to his plan of salvation, he sent his only Son into the world, born of the Virgin Mary, to reveal his love for us in a definitive way. Whoever sees Jesus sees the Father (cf. Jn 14:9). Jesus of Nazareth, by his words, his actions, and his entire person.

2. We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Our salvation depends on it. Mercy: the word reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. Mercy: the ultimate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy: the fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person who looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life. Mercy: the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness
